Not quite sure why (and totally off topic) but that statement makes me feel a bit defensive, though I acknowledge the current economic/ political/education climate has me testy in general, so I may be reading in more than was intended. I'm just finishing my 21st year teaching and like Bill G, I've always taught summer school and/or signed up for whatever supplemental education committee/task force work needed doing. But In my district that stuff has totally dried up - doesn't exist. Which is a mixed blessing. It's harder to make ends meet, for sure - especially after our district cut 8 days off the school year this year (5% pay cut). As others have said, it could be worse. At my son's school all the teachers got pink slips last week, and have to re-apply for their jobs (at 10% less pay). but my wife and kids are thrilled to actually see me in the daylight. And for someone who's not really a people person but spends every day in a room of 33 twelve year olds, it will be good to recharge. And biking is cheap. btw - if anyone is looking for a good read that takes an in-depth look at the current trends in education (What do "accountability" and "school choice" really mean?) check out Diane Ravitch's The Death and Life of the Great American School System.
