The other day I was doing my morning ride with a friend who has STI shifting. So we're riding along, and we both shift for a hill. His clicked into gear, mine to a bit of feel. At that point, I think I realized why I like friction shifting: it's like shifting a manual transmission as opposed to an automatic or like sailing with a tiller as opposed to a wheel. With a manual transmission, you need to pay attention to your RPMs before shifting. When sailing with a tiller, you get instant feedback between you, the boat, and the water; using a wheel as always frustrated me because I really don't get the same feedback, I feel disconnected from the boat. I think it's that same thing with friction shifting as opposed to indexing on a bike. But each to their own.
