It's funny, from all the forum posts and email messages I feel as though I know some of you, even though we've never actually met. Same goes for "long-time online friend" Tom Allingham, who I feel I "know" pretty well, even though we actually met face to face for the first time only this morning. We've been (for months) threatening to get together for a Riv ride, and finally we rode a really awesome 35 mile hilly loop from Frenchtown, NJ exploring half a dozen covered bridges in Upper Bucks County PA and Western Hunterdon County NJ. Tom brought his stunning silver Atlantis, and I, my dark green Bombadil. Both are set up in a similar fashion, with upright bars, racks, saddlebags, and generator hub lighting. These bikes were definitely at home rolling down the Delaware towpath and traversing the beautiful hills and covered bridges of Bucks County.
The best part was seeing the reaction to the Rivs among a group of road-bikers at a popular lunch stop along the Delaware River. These guys (brightly clad and riding a colorful variety of carbon and alu racing bikes) couldn't take their eyes of the Rivs, and they were especially enamored with Tom's Atlantis, crowding around it, pointing out all the cool features. I could almost sense a longing in their hearts to join us... We obviously looked like we were enjoying our ride way too much... And indeed we did... for it was a beautiful day, and we were riding beautiful bikes over some stunningly beautiful terrain. On a slightly different topic, I'm starting to think ahead about Riv Rally East 2012... I've got several destinations swirling in my head, from the Erie Canal in NY, the Great Allegheny Passage in Western PA, the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA or possibly the Berkshire Mountains of MA. Either way, I hope to get to finally "meet" some of you. Tom, it was great to finally "meet" you, and having the chance to ride your AWESOME Atlantis.
