There's a great guest article on Kent's Bike Blog about route finding/selection. http://kentsbike.blogspot.com/2011/11/invisible-routes-by-mark-canizaro.html
I'd subtitle it 'The Road/s Less Traveled'. It's been my experience and now deeply founded practice to find routes with the least amount of traffic. I want my rides to be fun. The more cars I encounter the more the experience of the ride suffers. I'm especially focused on this when I choose where my commute routes take me. I've learned to avoid the 'school zone scrum' during times that folks are picking-up/dropping-off their kids. The fewer cars that pass me the more fun I have. The only problem with road riding is auto traffic. I'm a driver and a rider and have learned that cars aren't my friends.
