Anne's original thread about bike weight wandered OT into gearing, a
subject which generates either passionate enthusiasm or deep snoring.
It was time for a new subject line.

I mentioned that I had a 9 speed 11-34 to convert into an 8 speed
13-34. Well by golly it works suprisingly well. After filing off the
3 rivets holding it together, I inserted 8 speed spacers in place of
the 9s and used an 8 speed 13 tooth small cog (it was a bit thicker
than the 13 second position that came with the cassette). Shifters
are 8 speed Ultegra bar ends and the indexing works as well as it does
with a standard 8 speed cassette.

The moral of the story is not to be afraid to shuffle the cards. I
have mixed'n'matched 7s & 8s stuff successfully. It's nice to know
that 9s can also be mixed in. BTW, this is all with a standard SRAM
8xx $25) chain with a few thousand miles on it and an ancient Deore RD
from an 80s era MTB, so nothing special in the way of equipment.
