I rode the GAP & C&O a couple of years ago - Pittsburgh to DC to home, a friend and I (me: Bleriot, her: Atlantis). Lots of fun.
We rode from Ohiopyle to Falling Water because I'd never seen the house. It was not a difficult climb, long not steep, and with some breaks and definitely worth it. Reservations are needed for the Falling Water tour, and there are specific times. We were there on a weekday in October and had no trouble getting a reservation the same day. But on a weekend, it might be more difficult. Just some details to keep in mind as you plan.
Train: we used a shuttle service, much more economical than the train - at least for traveling between DC and Pittsburgh. The way the Amtrak schedule worked would have required a night in a hotel, so the shuttle was cheaper (though it would have been neat to take Amtrak).
Here's trail status on the GAP website: http://www.atatrail.org/tmi/status.cfm
That website is a wealth of information, and that's where I found a list of shuttle services.

Thanks for the warning, Larry... It may not be practical to do the
FallingWater side trip... it is quite a house, though isn't it?

Sunday we will roll into Ohiopyle, PA, home of the famous Youghigheny Gorge, where we may take an an optional short excursion out of town to visit the famous Frank Lloyd Wright house, FallingWater (a trip WELL WORTH taking). We will finish day off in Connellsville, PA, where I am making arrangements to shuttle ourselves, bike and gear back to Frostburg. This will be a self-supported, credit card type of tour, which means that unless you have a buddy, spouse or otherwise hired person to meet you in Confluence PA on the first evening, you'll need to carry a change of clothes, toothbrush and other essentials to get you through 2 days of riding. A small duffle on a rack shoud suffice, or go all out with front and rear panniers... up to you. Me, I hope to toss a duffle in my big Wald basket... that's how I like to roll..

I hope we can get the same crew from 2011 returning this year, along with a few of you who couldn't make it last year. To our West Coast buddies, I'll bet we could get a few loaner bikes if any of you would care to join us... We'd love to have you.
