Five weeks later,I stumbled upon the answer my question! I was reading the packaging the HPX 4 came in and notice that the HP setting is for pumping and the mysterious "X" setting is for mounting. When placed in X-mode, this pump fits PERFECTLY [underneath the topmost tube & on pump peg] on my 2011-made 64cm Sam, in case anyone else is looking for a frame pump now, or stumbling through the archives at some point...
Also worth noting that new Zefal "Classic" HPX pumps with polished aluminum bodies are gorgeous and work just like the older models.
