Peter: I regard my Bomba as a master of roads of all types and of moderate offroad terrain... that's what I love about it. Everyone's definition of mountain biking may be different. Based on my definition, I would never take my Bomba on the same trails as I do my dedicated mountain bike (which is also a steel-framed 29er, but much lighter, and set up for rocky, rooty, twisty and steep terrain). To me the Bomba is as mountain bikeish as it is roadish. And for the kind of riding you describe it would be well-suited.
BTW as an urban assault bike it rules... Last year I rode my Bomba in the Five Boro Tour... super comfy, even on the BQE and the Gowanus!!!
