You are assuming those modern mountain bike journalists have ever seen any of those wonderful randonneur bikes of the 1950s. I think not -- but if they did I agree, they wouldn't recognize them. I'll go farther: given how mountain bikes pretty much are actually used by the vast majority of customers, had we in the USA any knowledge of those 650B randonneur bikes of the 1950s, the mountain bike would never have gotten off the ground.
