Hear Hear Patrick! I like sandals on moderate or fairly "flat" rides with my dual surface Shimano pedals. However I would not attempt my longer , faster paced rides with monster climbs- out of saddle -without my SPD shoes and quality insoles. I have injured my feet in the past by attempting it. The right equipment for given scenario can add a lot of enjoyment.
