Hi South Bay Area Folks-

I'm planning another S24O to Castle Rock State Park this weekend...

(Article on S24O camping:
https://www.adventurecycling.org/resources/Petersen_S240s.pdf )

When: Sunday evening 9/2/2012
Where: Castle Rock State Park "hiker-biker" campground, aka "Castle Rock Trail
Camp"

Camp map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/538/files/CastleRockCGmap.pdf

I did my first-ever S24O here on Memorial Day this year, and it was lovely.
There are several clusters of campsites. I found the ones on Frog Flat (#1
through #5) to be most pleasant, with open sky for stargazing, so that's where
I'll probably be. Full moon is Friday 8/31 (my birthday!) so it will rise a
couple of hours after sunset on Sunday.

Bike access to the campground is only via the ~1 mile dirt road called "Service
Road Trail" on the map, which is about 1.5 miles South of Hwy 9 on Hwy
35/Skyline Blvd. The "Service Road Trail" shares a driveway with the Los
Altos
Rod& Gun Club at 14750 SKYLINE BOULEVARD, LOS GATOS, CA 95033. The Service
Road
is to the left when facing the Gun Club entrance.

There is piped drinking water at the campground, though in these times of
tight
state budgets, I'll be bringing enough water to get me through the night, just
in case it is not available. I'll be registering for a campsite, which is
good
for up to six people, so no need for you to register unless we get a crowd.

I'm planning to ride from our home in Redwood Estates via Summit/Skyline,
leaving late afternoon Sunday, with a very rough ETA at the campground of 5-6pm

-- time enough to pitch camp, eat some dinner, and maybe take a little hike
before sunset. In the morning I'm planning to rise when my body is ready to
wake up (Yay!) and ride home to Redwood Estates again via Skyline/Summit.

I lucked out when I was there on Memorial Day, in that it was the last day of
the burn season, so I was able to build a campfire. Now that it is peak fire
season, we won't be able to have a campfire. (I'll be bringing a tiny camp
stove). It is predicted to be in the low 50's at night, so I'll be bringing
layers of wool...

I'd love to have some company; hope to meet you there.

cheers,
Andrew
