Books will necessitate something more beefy than the lightweight long rear rack 
that Rivendell sells.

So the Nitto big rear makes a lot of sense. It fits easily on the Ram's mounts. 
Pretty sure the sidepulls won't intersect the rack's support rods. The Ram can 
handle a full rear rack, just not a full size front rack.

Nitto + Riv frame routinely is a tight match. The Nitto big is one of those 
inexpensive things that is worth it. I've toured many times with one on several 
different Rivendells.
