For reference (I use Ortlieb Packer Pluses and Packers) the Large carries
33 l stuffed but not violated, the M 23 l ditto, and the flap 'n' strap
arrangements would probably allow at least 30% more for properly packaged
items. A pair of Packer Pluses carries 50 l, and the smaller front Packers
with extensions about 30 l the pair. Actually, I wonder about the last
figure, because my experience with the smaller fronts is that as a pair it
is hard to get more than I got into the Medium -- absolute volume is not
the same thing as usable space. Overall, I'm confident that, for groceries
at least if not peanuts or compressible clothing, the S-M easily holds as
much as one fully extended and stuffed Ortlieb Packer Plus.

I will add that, having recently owned a Hoss, the Medium tho' smaller (26
vs 23) provides at least as much usable room, perhaps because it is easier
to load without things falling out. It certainly has more usable carrying
room than a Camper Longflap at 24 l.

Given that the Green Riv doesn't really like rear loads over 25 lb, the M
ought to be just right. (Odd, since I've had lighter frames that could
easily handle 15 lb more.)
