Thanks, Ron and Brewster -- will archive this for later. As it happened, I
scrounged a 38 from my visiting brother and slapped that on, so that I now
have these drivetrains:

38/24 with (seriatim, Kojaks and Big Apples):

12-13-14-15-16-18-21-26, for 86" down to 25" with the cruising gears of 69
and 65 in the #4 and #5 cogs; and

(still debating, but something like): 13-15-17-18-21-26-34 for 85" down to
20" and the 17 and 18 cogs at 65" and 61". May go
13-15-16-17-18-20-23-26-34 or ... 20-24-38-34 for slightly closer gaps on
the low end, but don't think so.

I'll try this, and if I don't like it, will go back to 44/36/24 seven.
