Thanks, Ron and Brewster -- will archive this for later. As it happened, I scrounged a 38 from my visiting brother and slapped that on, so that I now have these drivetrains:
38/24 with (seriatim, Kojaks and Big Apples): 12-13-14-15-16-18-21-26, for 86" down to 25" with the cruising gears of 69 and 65 in the #4 and #5 cogs; and (still debating, but something like): 13-15-17-18-21-26-34 for 85" down to 20" and the 17 and 18 cogs at 65" and 61". May go 13-15-16-17-18-20-23-26-34 or ... 20-24-38-34 for slightly closer gaps on the low end, but don't think so. I'll try this, and if I don't like it, will go back to 44/36/24 seven. Bash guards?
