Chris,
Yeah, I dumped the 36 and the 46 and got a 40 and the guard. I'd do it again 
for sure. The 40x12 is good enough for downhill (for me) and I find I just 
leave it in the 40 for almost everything. I tried leaving the 36 but it just 
never quite felt right when I needed a little oomph. The crank looks a little 
funny and small, but classy.
