Interesting. I asked Simon Rakower, who makes and sells the original wide rim, the SnoCat (44 mm wide), to compare fat bikes with 29ers using SnoCat-like rims and fat 29er tires. He told me that there are trade-offs to both but that many of his wheel builds are for fatbike owners who want something less ponderous than their 559X4"+ wheels.
Me, I am waiting for a reasonably priced, decently light 700C tire wider than 60 mm/2.3". Salsa has the Kendall but it is too knobby for my needs and, in any event, $90 or so retail. A 70 mm Fat Frank, with lightweight sidewalls and sophisticated tread rubber compound, in non-slimming white or cream -- desideratum indeed! On Tue, Mar 5, 2013 at 12:14 PM, Robert F.
