Aha, you are right -- imagining back to when I have the shifters off
the bike, they will ratchet without resistance in the "upward"
direction and with resistance on the "downward" direction, this last
being the direction that the derailleur spring would pull them. I
confused the pull of the derailleur spring with an internal spring.
