Ain't it nice? I was riding my "03 errand fixie on Friday after picking up
a week's worth of Mom's junk mail in the Sackville and passed another
commuter on a Soma Something -- who caught up to me and said that it was a
beautiful bike and that it was the first Rivendell he'd seen in person. (We
parted with mutual compliments.)

Rams: Change o' heart, O my friends, change o' heart. I had originally
thought of building mine up as a derailleur gofast with tubulars; but
dammit, gofasts are so g'damn boring (unless they are fixies -- gofast
fixies are as the idiot said, "happenin".). No, no: it will be a
pavement-biased All Rounder, so that it now waits for a clincher wheelset
and a classic-era XT 7 speed rear hub. Instead of 23 mm tubs I wish,
desire, hope, crave, hanker, long, and yearn for, aspire to, and set my
heart upon, something light, supple, fast and yet, withal, strong, durable,
stout -- shrugging off the blows and ravages and physical contumelies that
rubber is heir to -- yea! -- something very like the old Avocet Crosses:
does anyone make such a tire today? Something that rolls well on pavement
yet is not upset by firm dirt and gravel.

Kojaks are wunnerful tiers, but lack any tread. There are many cross tires,
including tubs, but I want something that is capable on smooth pavement. 32
to 37 mm (the Ram easily swallows my 35 Kojaks).

Suggestions?

It's largely built except for wheels and cassette. I hope to set it up with
a 7 speed cassette, since the DA dt shifters are -- well, 7-speed indexed.

If anyone wants to trade 7-speed Dura Ace dt shifters for Simplex
Retrofrictions, he's an idiot but I am interested.
