I went straight to v-brakes, and one of the first things I wanted to do was 
to swap that out;  my true LBS (the one in town) didn't have the right size 
spacer, only had threadless ones that wouldn't fit;    his recommended 
solution was for me to use a grinder and take the hanger part off....    I 
didn't want to do that, so, I've left it in place for now.   Have to admit, 
I didn't think about trying to just tighten everything down as-is after 
removing it, I just expected to need a correctly-sized spacer, but haven't 
thought to ask at the other LBS in the next towns over....
