One more remark about CF and the modern racing bike. At Stevie's I was put
to installing a wireless computer on the first high end Trek (electric Dura
Ace) that I've encountered up close -- Madone? Forget. (In contrast, a 2005
Madone, in for consignment, looks practically traditional.) It annoyed the
hell out of me, less because of the 1/8" clearances (literally) around the
23 mm tires than because it so obviously and conscientiously and earnestly
hit all the current marketing check-off boxes: shaped "tubing": check.
Billboard graphics: check. Integrated headset: check. Hugely built bb area:
check. Large diameter anatomical bar: check. 11 speed: check.

Very light, and, at least on the stand, the electric shifting was fun to
play with -- whirr, grind, clack! -- but it was very, very odd to see it
built with platform pedals and with a clamp-on rack with trunk attached to
the CF seatpost. Seems the old guy who brought it in (my gawd! he must have
been 60!!!!) had received it from someone who had to give up cycling. But
he (og) said he loved it.

I almost disgraced myself by carelessly making snide and snickering remarks
about it, unaware that the owner was standing at the doorway --
fortunately, he seemed not to hear or else did a very good job of
pretending he hadn't.
