Do you recall the cost of the steel Surly ring?  

When you compare the cost of plain flat aluminum to comparable rings with 
ramps'n'pins there seems to be quite a premium for the extra goodies.  
Perhaps helpful with STI or similar but with friction the basic version 
works fine for 10-12 tooth differences.
