Definitely do it. Setting the limit screw works just fine, and you can get used to any nuances it introduces to shifting. I have been using the Riv bash guard crank on all my bikes for years now and love it. For a while it was just the "quickbeam crank" and I would just run the stock 40/32 until the aluminum rings needed replacing. I never use the big ring on triples either, and on my touring rig I don't even need a 40t ring, I get by with a 36. I can't hit all 8 cogs with both chainrings though; certainly not with the granny anyway- the chain would not be psyched on the outer cogs.
