Thanks for your concern, Steve. Nicotine addiction is minimal to nonexistent. In my 15 years of pipe smoking, I've often gone without a pipe for weeks or months (for any number of reasons) and never experienced any withdrawal or craving. But then I've never liked "heavy" tobacco. Cancer risk is greatly diminished if smoking at proper temperatures (not too hot a pipe) and smoking pure tobacco without the hundreds of additives in cigarettes. But you are right, it is still a risk.
