It is the general consensus that the more cogs you have in back, the more
precise the user of the friction shifter must be. Almost everyone agrees
that there is a line, beyond which you have too many cogs in back and can
no longer execute good shifts with friction shifters.

The thing you will find if you go poll a lot more riders is where that line
is between good and bad. My view of the space is

5-cogs everyone agrees this is perfect for friction
6-cogs everyone agrees friction works fine
7-cogs almost everyone agrees friction works fine (~98% of riders)
8-cogs a significant percentage of riders think this is where friction
shifting becomes a problem. I'd estimate about 20% of riders say they
won't run friction here
9-cogs It's a lot closer to 50/50 here. You will get a LOT of anectdotal
YES votes and a lot of anectdotal NO votes. If there is a gray area, it is
here
10-cogs You will hear occasional reports of trying it and hating it. Once
in a while you'll hear somebody say "I use it in friction and it's OK".
but probably 90% or more agree index is better
11-cogs I've never heard of anyone trying it

Me, I've never tried friction shifting on 10 or 11, but I have on several
bikes with 9 speed. The only time I hated it was with a Dura Ace rear
derailer. I switched that bike to index. With a short cage XT derailer,
it's great, and I have that setup on 2 bikes. So the line for me is
between 9 and 10, and 9 is a "light gray" gray area.
