For that very reason, Riv was a proponent of low-normal derailleurs.   All 
three of mine have 'em, the two w/ bar-end shifters and the one w/ downtube 
shifters.   Actually, all three have the exact same model, a long cage XT 
model...   (M760-SGS).    

There was talk shortly after their discontinuation, of a possible 
alteration that could be made to high-normal ones (a relocation of how the 
spring pulls) to convert them to low-normal, in order to maintain them as 
an option, but, there were issues in doing such, and they went away.   

So, a lot of Rivs have them, up until the past year or so.
