There's tree root /\ stuff between Alexandria and Mount Vernon, but unless you're on a suspension bike you're going to feel it no matter how wide the tires. People ride it on 23mm tires all the time, although I will admit I hate to take the one bike I own that uses narrow (25mm) tires on the trails.
