Yeah, the desire for instant gratification can lead you down many a rabbit hole (or up a mountain of debt...mix your metaphors!) Actually, I don't think I've ever actually owned a bike that I didn't have to save for. I may have used credit cards to finance them, especially for cross-border shopping, but I tried not to charge more than I could comfortably pay off .
