Subject: [RBW] Bike Lessons Learned , Greetings & Albatross Bars

Paul C in Dallas TX here,

Good morning,
I read the list but rarely post.

I read several other lists and am regularly struck with the civility &
camaraderie I see
of the rivbike list. And I would even add kindness & compassion to what I see
on list. Good job all..

I thought I would comment on that.

Even though I do not currently have a Riv bike, I probably was a riv owner
before 95% of you. I was just learning about bikes and stumbled across Rivendell
back in 1998. I learned a lot and contacted Grant and listened to his
recommendations
and ordered the custom road frame offering of the time
built by Joe Starck & painted by Joe Bell.

I even had exceptionally great wheels with Phil hubs built for it by Joe Young.
I referred to it as my 'triple Joe bike'.
I think it was stamped as a Jan of 1999 build.
I still have a picture of it somewhere I think I will try to find and post.

I rode it for a few years and was then was influenced too much by the 'go fast'
idea
and regrettably sold it to finance supposedly lighter and faster & smaller bikes
which I really did not make go all that fast after all.

If I had the chance to buy that frame back I would if I could swing the
financing.

Over the years I learned a lot about bikes and how to build them up myself
and have been through dozens and dozens of bikes in the process of learning
what I like
& what works for my style of riding.

I found I still preferred a build and size quite similar to that 1999 Rivendell.

I do have several bikes built up in the 'Rivendell' fashion. (ie; vintage Ron
Cooper sports touring model
& Miyata 1000)
Over the years I have slowed down quite a bit and have learned to enjoy the
'stop & smell the roses' and 'take pics' type of rides.

Two weeks ago I built up a higher end vintage Schwinn mt bike for the 2nd time
utilizing Albatross bars and very fat tires.
I had read such positive comments of the Albatross bars on this list I decided
to give them a try on this build. I will post a pic. I did a longish (for me)
ride on it yesterday of 53 miles & it did great.

I was concerned about the number of hand positions compared to my bikes with
road bars but I was surprised it worked out very well for me.

Well, enough said for this post.

Regards,
Paul in Dallas
