Thanks, that seems to have fixed my problems.
I wonder if it might be worth adding this information to the
RcppArmadillo web page? After some googling (including my original error
message), I didn't seem to come across this website, or advice
(although, I may just be bad at internet searching).

Why not download gcc from Fink or Homebrew or ...?
I'd be happy to try to see if that fixed my problem. I'd still quite
like to help to fix RcppArmadillo as well, partly because I want to
distribute this code and would prefer to not have to tell people to
install extra compilers.
