Subject: [Armornut's RC Armor Hut] Tank Fan Report: Friday at Danville (9/5/08)

Nice weather kept it cool at the Indoor Battlefield! Today was the start of the
AAF
Museum's September Battles. There were eight "early bird" tankers from 5 states
running
this afternoon and evening! Doug's inspections took 2 or 3 minutes and the
turnaround
between battles was about 5 minutes. He picked new teams from a hat about every
30
minutes so we got to team up with different wingmen. I didn't get a chance to
shoot any
video today, but here are 5 snapshots.

Here Brett preps his zippy Panzer III for another battle:

"Jersey" Bob was back again with a variety of tanks:

Here's the guts of Bob's captured T-34:

A new feature on the battlefield is Doug's old French fortress:

Another is the new railway in the SW corner:

I'll have better pics tomorrow night.

***But I've got to tell you about a funny thing that happened. I wish we caught
it on tape.
Near the end of one battle, my Sherman was confronting John's King Tiger inside
the town.
I drove in close to hit him once and then I scooted past him down a street. He
tried to
bring his long 88 mm around in a tight space. Well, in the excitement, I
accidentally
crashed up onto a rock and my turret popped off! (I have a Tiff Williams resin
turret with
no ring tabs). Everybody screamed and laughed, thinking the game was over for
me! The
turret dangled upside down. I thought I was going to get killed or have to
withdraw as a
mechanical TKO. But before John could bring his barrel around on me, I quickly
backed off
the rock and the turret magically flipped back over into the hole! The turret
ring even
seated back in the gears so I could aim! I fired first. He lit up and died! The
final shot of
the game! Laughter and amazement by all...! We could never be repeat this in
100 tries.
It will be forever known as "The Bobblehead Kill". Darn, if only we had a tape
to post on
YouTube...! It was a hoot. No, not historical...but a hoot!

More battle tales tomorrow.
