Subject: [Armornut's RC Armor Hut] Tank Fan Report: Sunday at Danville (9/7/08)

On Sunday eight die-hard tankers battled for a third day in a row! We finished
Doug's
Team Competition battles for valuable certificates from the museum PX. And we
enjoyed
an extended lunch to tell all kinds of stories with the gang. It was a very
pleasant day with
a very enjoyable hobby. A great bunch of guys.

One thing I noticed was that on Friday Quinn and his father John were "the
newbies", but
by Sunday they had become strong and dependable wingmen in battle. Everybody
really
helped them along "the RC tank learning curve" all weekend, until they were
nearly as
capable of scoring hits and kills as any of us veterans out there. That was
cool.

More pics! I was busy battling all day, but I made a point to at least snap a
few more
photos:

Here is "Jersey" Bob Held's motorpool at his workbench...a good variety of
vehicles:

Bob tested the wireless video camera on his 222. This little car weighs about
ten pounds!

Of course, Willy ran more of his trucks Sunday...this one I called "Mad Max"!

Here Willy uses a custom conversion forklift to place a motor onto a Pershing:

Doug Gasser did another outstanding job as the facilitator of this AAF RC
Battle event. I
include a shot of his poster here in order to point out some of the nice things
about it. As
you can see, tankers are encouraged to "coach" or tudor the newbies in basic RC
lasertag
techniques DURING some battles. (This is terrific, because ultimately, it helps
make them
more challenging opponents for all of us). Everything at the event is set up to
be "fair and
fun". And finally, the battles will be non-stop...so if you throw a track or
something, the
gang won't stand around waiting for you...just take your time to get your act
together and
join us for the NEXT battle!

On Sunday we also experimented with something a little different. We controlled
a couple
battles using an "RC racing style" platform. Which means all 8 of us stood at
one end of
the battlefield on top of the old Bradley training turret! From up there we had
a different
perspective on the battle:

Here's the bird's eye view from high up on the Bradley turret. This was an
entirely new
ballgame, because we could no longer depend on the "line-of-sight" style
shooting that
we are so accustomed to. I really enjoyed this "3rd person" view of combat!
However,
there were no secrets among enemies...because we were all standing side by
side, and
could overhear all the team tactics!

This is Quinn with his 3rd place prize. He beat a lot of Danville veterans to
get it. And in
the team competition he even scored his first official kill! He and his dad
came up from
Winston-Salem, and their enthusiasm for this hobby is contagious!

Well, just like on Friday and Saturday, I have one more funny story to finish
with. On
Sunday afternoon we were getting a little giddy from all the non-stop fun. So
at the end
of one battle, Doug tried to back his Panzer III over the railroad ties at the
edge of the
field. He ended up "popping a wheelie" and it stuck in that upright position!
Then I tried
the stunk with my big Tiger I, and I ended up dumping my electronics all over
the floor! It
was silly, yes, but I guess we were loopy from fighting about 100 battles this
weekend!!!

In closing, I want to thank Doug for running a totally stress-free weekend, and
Karen and
Bill for hosting all us fanatical tankers once again. Hey, there are plans in
discussion for
maybe adding more battledays sometime soon...so keep an eye out for new
announcements.

Meanwhile, I've got to get my tanks fixed up for Tomas' Texas battles in just
two weeks!!!
See "y'all" there!
