It would be better to charge both batteries in "parallel" using the 12v
charger (tie all black wires together and all red wires together). That
allows them both to reach their own maximum levels while on the charger,
regardless of the difference between their internal resistance. When
charged in series, one battery will always charge higher than the other,
with the difference in charge proportional to the difference in internal
resistances.
