I have a Cummins 5278 7x12 lathe. It's the same as the Harbor Freight and a
couple of other models. I got the Cummins version because it came with more
accessories. It's been able to handle most of the things I want to do. I
think it weighs about 90lbs so it can be moved by one person. The only thing
I remember not being able to do with it is wind my torsion springs. The
lathe just didn't have the slow torque needed to wind the 1/8" music wire.
My biggest problem with it is that I don't know how to use it well. I guess
I can't blame the lathe for THAT. Frank gave me a great lathe lesson at this
year's TankFest, but like most skills, the knowledge disappears if you don't
use it consistently.

Subject: [TANKS] Lathe recommendations?
Does anyone have recommendations for small lathes that would be
suitable for this hobby? I have been interested in them for a while
and think that an 8x12 or 9x20 would be the right size but I am open
for suggestions from more experienced modelers. I have read a lot on
the internet but wanted some opinions from people who are nearby and
might be able to help with moving it in my basement (j/k)
Thanks,
Tom
