Buy the biggest machine you have space for, both in your wallet and
your shop.

I have a Southbend 10K lathe (54" bed, 10" swing) that's more machine
than I will normally use, but it's got the oomph to do what I need it
to.

As for tooling/briknbrack, yeah, it adds up.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GETTING A MILLING ATTACHMENT FOR YOUR LATHE.

I'll say that again.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GETTING A MILLING ATTACHMENT FOR YOUR LATHE.

You're better off picking up one of the Mini-mills out there from
Harbour Freight (or equivelant) and using that.

A mill goes hand in hand with a lathe.

I ran a Sherline 4400 for a couple of years, and for my purposes
(mostly minor gun-work) it was not enough. The milling attachment for
it was barely adequate, and required great patience if you had any
kind of material to remove.

A job that took me 5 hours on the Sherline Mini-mill took me 25
minutes on my full-size mill. I timed it doing the same job.

Go big or go home.
