We have  explored this idea several times for our R2D2 robots.  About once a  
year someone does a group buy of Slip rings which brings the price down to  
about $50 for a 24 wire slip ring.  A low cost alternative is to use  the 
connectors for  a headphone  jack.

and there is still using a phone cord too if need be, just use a  short one 
with plugs on both ends (if you are using low current). then after  each battle 
if you want unplug, un-coil and then re-plug
