My best guess is that it's a feature of the esc. It's made for RC cars that are going forwards at a great amount of speed and if you hit backwards (by accident or one purpose), it won't immediately do that because more than likely it would break something in the car if it "slammed" into reverse. You need to double pump it to confirm you do indeed want reverse. You might want to check the manual to see if it can be disabled.
