First of all, welcome. Hmmm....starter kit? Not sure exactly what you mean there, but any "kit" in the size of vehicles we dabble in would be kind of expensive. I bought a 1/35 scale model and took measurements off of it. Then I multiplied the measurements by 35 and divided that by 6 to get to 1/6 scale (yes, I know there is some number to multiply the measurement by to get directly to 1/6 scale but I personally didn't use it). I would choose a tank that is somewhat large (small tanks as a first tank can cause issues with fitting everything in the chassis). I would also build a tank that doesn't have too many curves or wierd features that are hard to build. My tanks are built using a table saw, drill press (and hand drill), grinder, miter saw, dremel, and a jig saw. If I were you, I would start out with a material like wood since it's cheap and fairly forgiving. Other than that, look at how some of the tanks are constructed on the rctankcombat website to get some ideas on good and bad designs. It took like a year and a half for me to build my first vehicle. I'm building a second one and it will be mobile by the end of this weekend after only a month and a half. And by all means ask questions of the group. Personally I would build something like a JSU-152, a Jadgpanther, or a Jadgtiger as a beginner, but that's just me. Tank destroyers like those have gobs of room in them.
