The Spartan used 5/32" diameter music wire for it's suspension. It turned out perfect for the 50'ish lb vehicle. I'm sure that size wire would work fine up to around 100 lbs. It will all depend on the length of the suspension and the length of the movement arm.
I'm using the same type suspension on the Merkava MBT I'm working on now. The Merkava's suspension is using 1/4" diameter music wire. Although the Merk's torsion rods are longer than the Spartan, the rods are much stiffer. I've stood on the Merkava hull and it dipped perhaps 1" under the weight of around 220 lbs. Try the 5/32" music wire. It should work well for the Tiger. :) Mike ________________________________ From: Jeremy Caylor <[email protected]> To: R/C Tank Combat <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 9, 2009 9:16:18 PM Subject: [TANKS] #SV015 type Suspension Hello all! I've been lurking on the site for about 3 years now and had started a Tiger 1 about 2 years back but it had to be put on hiatus because of money issues. I doubt anyone will remember, but I posted some pics of the build on the mailing list a while back. Anyways, I just recently got back into it and decided that I am going to start working on it again. I've been playing with many suspension ideas and I saw for the #SV015, it has a very simple torsion-type suspension, pretty much what I want for my Tiger. Now my question is, what thickness of piano wire steel do you think I should use to support the heavier Tiger? I'm using 3/4" ply all around for the chassis and it's going to be pretty heavy... I'm guessing around 100-120lbs once its done. So that divided by 16 road wheels equals roughly 7.5lbs that each wheel will have to support. Any advice? I'm guessing about the same thickness of wire (5/32) used for the SV015, seeing as how it has a third less wheels to spread the weight out. I ship out for boot camp on the 21st of Sept, so the tank may have to sit during my time in the Corps, but I'm just trying to get a little more done on it.
