from the research I have been doing over the past week or two into welding, I
would suggest that welding steel to steel (and doing it well) is not hard but
just needs little practice, welding aluminum to aluminum will be more than
difficult enough, welding aluminum to steel would be out of the question for
the home hobbyist.

And it should be noted that welding aluminum (and any form of arc welding for
that matter) will release dangerous gases that need to be avoided with
appropriate safety precautions. Sadly such precautions include significant
ventilation, which typically means for us home hobbysists leaving the door open
as we dont have extensive extraction fan systems, and the door open approach
with a small breeze will blow away the shielding gas which allows you to weld
in the first place! (if you're using a gas shielding welder)

I've been looking into welding a fair bit recently because I am torn between
building my next vehicle out of welded steel, or welded aluminum......the jury
is still out.

I saw explosion welding done on TV once. Very impressive. I guess
you're pressing the metals together with such force that the atoms
have to mingle.
