TIG welders and some MIG welders will do aluminium. Mild steel can be good
but it can be a bit heavy, if you are worried about rusting if it you can
just spray paint it with etch paint or something or you can get it powder
coated. Wood would be a good idea as it's cheap and forgiving as previously
said. Also it's a lot more likely that you have sufficient woodworking tools
in your house than metalworking tools.
