I guess at $799 I personally wouldn't call the FOA Tiger cheap, but to each
his own.
The FOA Tiger is a sturdy kit from what I have read/seen on the web about
it. ABS
plastic is quite strong (I use it on my Sturmtiger tracks rivited to the
2060 attachment
chain). I have lost track pads, but never due to breakage of the ABS
plastic. It's always
been the aluminum rivits that have come loose. The kit makers have pics of
people
standing on the turret so it will hold some weight. I'm not sure I'm a big
fan of the plastic
tracks and sprockets that come with the kit, but there are folks on the list
(or that were
on the list) that have used them with limited success. I guess I tend to
really abuse my tanks
so I personally would steer away from using them for combat, but that's just
me. I would
sell the stock tracks/sprockets and fabricate my own - use the money for
motors or speed
controllers. Scrap sheet ABS cut-offs can be found on Ebay cheaper than
ordering sheets
directly from a supplier. If I were to build an FOA Tiger, I would make the
lower hull thicker
by adding additional ABS sheeting (cutting it to fit inside then clamp and
glue it the original
hull). The upper hull should be perfectly fine as well as the turret. I
say to make the lower
hull thicker to support the weight of the larger batteries and motors we
typically use in our
tanks (18ah or greater). The FOA hull does seem to support smaller
batteries in the 7ah
range that are lighter. I think the kiddie car motors they have adapted to
the kit would be
under-powered for our application. I wouldn't steer away from the kit, but
there maybe fitting
required (sanding, cutting, etc) to make the parts fit just right. All of
that fitting and gluing
with ABS glue can also produce some nasty dust and fumes. Have you tried
some of the
particulate masks that filter dust and fumes (the ones with the filters on
each side that cover
your mouth and nose)? One of those might help you get around getting
hospitalized while
building. Just a thought, I'm no doctor.
