I would submit that some people realized that height matters... as you
say, the Hetzer was made, and my own favorite WW2 tank, the StuG.  But
the hubris that accompanied the design of the Maus tells me that the
people who designed it (and those who authorized it) had no idea how
important a low profile is.

Look at the profile of the great big tank (I forget the designation)
out front of the Patton Museum...  Even though it's huge, they went
turretless for the profile (and probably also because it'd have been a
GIANT turret to holdd that early 105mm long barrelled gun).  Looks
like a scarab (the kind from Journey albums for our middle-aged
members :) with a really long gun out the nose.  And FOUR tracks!! woo
hoo!
