WARNING: I am about to ramble.
A long time ago when I was but a Trainee Factory Technician with British
Telecom, we had to do a short mechanical / metalwork course. We made a V-Block
and matching clamp and it introduced us to milling machines, shapers, lathes
and, most fun of all, the surface grinding machine.
Anyway, some weeks after we had completed this course a group of students from
the local college were invited in to use the BT workshops. They did the same
course as us but some of them weren't too bright. We used to enjoy watching
them because something always went wrong. The highlight came when one of them
forgot to engage the magnetic chuck on the surface grinder . . . On the first
pass the wheel grabbed his unfinished V block and hurled it at high, possibly
supersonic, speed across the workshop and embedded it an inch deep in the
plaster of the neighbouring office wall. We gave up watching them at this point
figuring that we were too young to die.
