You could make the fake volute spring out of very thin sheet metal wrapped around a dowel. Then just secure both ends. This will look and act more realistic than wood circles going in to a film canister. And keep the rest as it is so you still have spring compression inside the shock body, Or you could get some RC car shocks from online retailers for very cheap, They can hide inside and you would have oil damping just like the real thing. This would make for a much smoother suspension. This looks very nice by the way, Great attention to detail. Good luck with the build and looking forward to seeing more of it.
