1:6 scale in easy since you can take dimensions off model tanks that are readily available. boxy tanks are the easist to build. don't wory about getting intricate details in your machine either, just the basic reconizable shape. I've said it befoe that Tiger1 is the most simple, but Panthers, Cromwells, and Shermans should be easy as well. As for control systems I am as lost as you. My M43A Sherman isn't that far along, im still on suspension components. By the way, unless your loaded with time, money, and talent, dont bother with independent suspension. The best and most reliable tanks dont have it. Your build will go much quicker the simpler you keep it, equating to sooner play time. Good luck
