Fred,
      You're probably dead on with your diagnosis. The Comet has been
suffering from a mysterious electrical gremlin since the addition of
the M-1 motors and not being able to use the Tri-Pact speed
controller. A  change to the scooter  motor controller at the 12th
hour seemed to have succeeded ,until ,of course the battle was to
begin.Pics of the controller and boards will be posted on the battle
summary. Since the turret containing simple switches and servos still
worked fine, we brought out the deadly Bunker Comet for battle #2.
Tracy seemed to have no problem laying down fire.
       But back to your point. So this winter, a total tear down and
testing of each component of the chassis wiring is in order. Luckily
for me, Frank can lead me threw this search for the ugly gremlin, or
it's gremlin clan.
