someone a few weeks ago (months maybe?) posted pictures of these superb laser 
(plasma? water jet?) sprockets and other parts and was posted the prices they 
were paying (and IIRC it was a very good price). i think the parts were being 
cut out from maybe 3/16" steel plate (or there abouts)

Have a look at this  too, another way of making a realistic metal/rubber track, 
cheap, easy, these took me about 20 man hours to cut/drill the rubber and 
assemble (metal parts were laser cut).
