You might look at the FIRST competitions. My dad works with a local team, and they have good sized robots that need good speed control. Some of their stuff is competition use only(like the Sabre motor controller apparently) but you might be able to find stuff designed for the heavier uses done here through them. It seems it might be a better bet than the RC stuff from what I'm reading here.
