A trick I was shown was to put it in a drill press, and HAND turn the tap into the material. A few threads will keep it straight, and once started, you open the chuck, remove your material, put on the handle, and go from there.
A lathe would work similar--unless you have special attachments(same with drill press) it's too complicated to use power unless you're not using a tap to cut threads.
