Yep I did the same, I left the red power receiver off the ESC when I
ran with just the small receiver battery pack. Had no issues until I
hooked up the sound unit. And only then it was the negative wire that
burned up. Sound unit was fine until I powered up the ESC. I'm hoping
it has something to do with the 12 volt verse 24 volt hookup I did.

But I can't help but wonder if the the ESC is causing some weird
voltages to surge back through the circuit?
